I woke this morning with a heavy heart but a surreal sense of God’s power.

The shooting on Seattle Pacific University’s campus has shaken us to the core. It is a special place for our family. Our daughter is on staff. She, her husband, our son, and several other family members are alumni. We are grateful for this Christian university whose mission is to impact the world with the love of Christ. SPU may be an institution but it seems more like an extended family.

I cannot begin to write anything that compares with some of the beautiful essays and journals that have been shared by students, faculty, staff and families. The stark reality of their pain comingled with a sense of God’s mercy, love and grace is salve to this mom’s soul. I can only echo their confusion, doubts and sadness, and I trust God who promises to be their comfort.

This morning I lean on Psalm 16:7-8: “I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

We have seen great evil and experienced deep darkness. At the same time, we have seen incredible light. God’s glory has radiated through the prayers and faith of his beloved children.

spuLord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.
