Boomers are frequently called upon to provide care for family members–from elder parents to adult children or grandchildren. During the month of November, communities around the nation will honor these unsung heroes. We want to
encourage local churches to do likewise. These saints in your pews (or at home!) are ministering in profound ways. How can you support them?
Some time ago, we published an article about family caregivers. Here is what we heard caregivers say they needed from their local churches and pastors. Perhaps it will help you as you minister to them.
What Boomer Caregivers Need from the Church
- Cut us a little slack! As a rule we energetically serve on boards, committees and teach classes, but the demands of caring for the needs of many generations is crowding everything else out. Please honor the validity of our current ministry.
- We need a little help from our friends. Stay connected through texts, emails, Facebook messages, and phone calls. And, when there is time, sharing a latte would be nice – especially if you foster a safe environment for venting!
- Help us navigate the maze. “Why didn’t I see that coming?” has become our motto. Sponsor support groups or classes on caregiving. Develop a staff person or volunteer who can connect us to community resources as well as introduce us to others who have walked this journey.
- Love our parents. Visit, encourage, and pray for them. Give them tools to help them grow spiritually and finish well.
- Love our kids. Give them spiritual guidance and support.
- Foster a culture throughout the entire church that honors life from cradle to grave and all that lies between.
