I turned in my notice today. I’m retiring! Tonight’s discussion could not have come at a more perfect and necessary time.
We gathered around the fireplace in our friends’ cozy living room to lead a Third Calling Conversation.* Nancy introduced herself and shared the news–she was leaving a 40-year career as an Intensive Care nurse. We clapped and cheered in unison. Of course, we were full of questions. After all, everyone in the circle was a Boomer, and in some fashion or another, each of us shared in the angst that accompanies the word retirement.
Instead of listing grandiose plans and ambitions, however, Nancy went on to say:
I most look forward to having a little space. Space to think; to rest. I’m not sure I can just jump into something else to DO.
Profound insight!
While we may have abundant opportunities for service and meaningful activity in this new season of life, it is critical to find space and time for reflection and rest. It may be wise to take a “gap year” (or two!) between retirement and launching into what’s next. It is always a good idea to intentionally schedule the time to evaluate and dream (like a Re-Ignite retreat!) It is in the quiet that we hear God speaking, directing and even calling us to what we are to do the rest of our lives.
Discovering and following one’s Third Calling is about living a glorious blend of time, rest, serenity, significance, purpose and activity.
Let’s keep the conversation going!
